Ballet: A classical dance form characterized by
grace and precision of movement and by
elaborate formal gestures, steps, and poses.*

self-discipline and a core foundation for most
other dance forms.
Creative Movement/Music & Movement: A
child's introduction to dance though imagination,
rhythm and movement concepts, structured play,
and props. Motor skills are awakened and
imaginations inspired in this stimulating,
child-focused group setting.
Hip-Hop: Dance form influenced by popular urban
youth culture, usually associated with various forms
of Rap and R&B music. To excel in hip-hop, the
dancer must have a comprehension of jazz
technique. Therefore, enrollment in a jazz class is
mandatory for all youth registering for hip-hop.
Jazz: Any of various dances characterized by the
use of improvisation and influenced by rhythms and
techniques of jazz, rock, and R&B music. Jazz dance
is commonly used in Broadway shows and movies.
Though Jazz dance may look effortless, it is
physically demanding , and dancers must be in
exceptional shape. Both Jazz dance and modern
dance technique are based on the basics of the old
ballet tradition, and to excel in jazz dance, the
dancer must comprehend ballet technique.
Lyrical/Contemporary: Lyrical dance is the fusion of
ballet and jazz technique. Expression from the inner
emotion is a primary factor in choreographing and
interpreting this art form. A key element in looking at a
lyrical piece is seeing the movements done in a flowing or
continuos pattern. Instead of individual phrases, it reads
more like a paragraph to use a story analogy. Lyrical
dance interprets music or words, showing the audience
the emotion of the particular piece. The lines are
traditional in nature with a technique base that
determines the correct placement of the body angles.**
Pointe: Pointe classes are offered to
Advanced Ballet Levels I and II. The ballet
mistress must evaluate and approve each
student who wishes to take pointe class
according to criteria which includes age,
strength, placement, and other factors.
Students who aspire to pointe are
encouraged to take a pre-pointe class.
Tap: Dance form in which the rhythm is sounded out by
the clicking taps on the heels and toes of a dancer's
shoes.
Tap dance was born in the United States during the 19th
century, and today is popular all around the world. The
name comes from the tapping sound made when the
small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard
floor. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer
not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician.*
