October 17th 12:00-1:30pm - Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance form that is at least 2000 years old and is marked by beautiful rhythmic movements and facial expressions to communicate stories. During the master class, participants will be taught basic hand gestures and a few foundational steps that are essential to create dance pieces. The last half hour of the class will be used to talk about the history of this Art form in addition to taking questions from the participants. This dance form is only done bare foot. So, it is imperative that participants not wear any foot wear (including socks) during this master class. The attire can be anything that gives space to breathe, stretch and flow during the master class.
October 17th 1:45-3:15pm - African Roots
CLAVES UNIDOS, Artistic Director, Kevin LaMarr Jones delivers his signature ‘African Roots Reunion’ community dance workshop. In any one session, dancers of all experiences may encounter dance and musical forms from Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, the United States and beyond as he weaves together movements from Rumbas to Ring Shouts, dancing along a through-line which he considers a reunion rather than a ‘fusion’ of African dance movements. Experience first-hand the ability of dance, music and memory to build community as this open-level, fun-for-all class takes participants on a kinetic world tour.
November 21st 12:00-1:30pm - Flamenco
Tanya Gonzalez has studied and taught Spanish flamenco for over 20 years. In this workshop, meant for beginners, we will focus on the structure and choreography of the Sevillanas, learning some of the basics, including footwork, hands, arms, palmas (clapping), and skirt work. Flamenco or character shoes and flamenco skirt are encouraged. Students that have never tried flamenco are welcome.
November 21st 1:45-3:15pm - Traditional Chinese
There are two categories in Chinese dances: Classical Chinese dance and Folk dance. Classical Chinese dance dates back over 5,000 years to the Court dances, and was performed in the palace of emperor. For centuries, classical Chinese dance was passed down mostly among the court people. After 1919, however, there was a group of dance artists who believed that they had a responsibility to systematically document Chinese dance—that was the beginning of the formal teaching of classical Chinese dance. In our workshop, we will mainly experience the Classical Chinese dance technique. We will learn the unique hand gesture and body grace. In addition, we will watch various folk dance performance videos to get a taste of the diverse cultures.
